The exe does NOT need to be launched with admin rights and NO compatibility mode needs to be set. If not already done, download 'CubicExplorer Portable' and 'Install' it (in fact only extraction) to a convenient directory. Steps to prevent the crash: • Make sure that Steam is not running.

If it is, quit it completely (check for the tray icon). • Launch CubicExplorer Portable and navigate to the directory where SupremeCommander.exe resides - usually C: Program Files (x86) Steam steamapps common Supreme Commander bin. • In CubicExplorer Portable doubleclick on SupremeCommander.exe.
Steam will launch then and ask for login or offline mode. • Log in or select offline mode. Steam will finish launching and afterwards Supreme Commander launches. After following these steps, Supreme Commander can be quit and launched again from within Steam as desired as long as Steam isn't quit.
If you quit it, you have to follow the above steps again. If you followed this guide, please leave a comment mentioning the result. If the game still doesn't start for you, please add your setup details to the comment. I suspect that CubicExplorer Portable has a different way of launching an executable (API call, parameter handling etc.), which doesn't trigger the crash cause.
After I convinced Windows to use external manifest files by setting the registry key PreferExternalManifest (see [support.microsoft.com]) and adding/modifying the needed manifest files (see also [blog.kalmbachnet.de]), I tested some additional Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable versions, but with neither of them I could avoid the error: • 8.0. (listed as dependency in embedded manifest of SupremeCommander.exe) • 8.0.50727.42 (already present in bin directory of Supreme Commander) • 8.0.50727.762 With SxsTrace I verified that the desired Visual C++ version used. Trace for 8.0.

Part of the problem could be that the manifest embedded in SupremeCommander.exe lists two different Microsoft.VC80.CRT versions as dependencies (see [blogs.msdn.microsoft.com]). @germanicianus: 'But if you have a running retail version, why do you try to get the Steam one running?'
I've got a product key. It can be activated on Steam. Isn't it a fancy waay to run game from Steam library? And there is some profit from using family sharing. 'If you really want to get the Steam SC version running please create a forum thread.'
I don't think it is good practice creating millions of same threads. Any way I made my humble contribution in the most appropriate thread in my opinion. Doesn't wor for me. SC Steam version is broken in some stupid way.
